After Biles pulled out of competition for the vault finals, MyKala replaced her in the competition. She did not compete in the team final because she qualified as an individual specialist to the Olympics. Nichols' experience symbolized the decades-long push-pull for high-level teenage athletes in Olympic sports, particularly in women's gymnastics, where many elite careers peak before their 20th birthday. She earned it by competing in the Apparatus World Cup Series, a set of eight meets between November 2018 and March 2020. Carey won for the vault, and three other gymnasts earned spots for the other apparatus.However, those four athletes are allowed to compete in any of the apparatus, so Carey was not limited to the vault in the Olympic qualifications.

She competed on all four and scored high enough in both vault and floor exercise to advance to the apparatus finals. Only two qualifying gymnasts from each country may participate in each event final. Olympic Trials in June, Skinner was selected as an individual specialist, meaning she was not a part of the four-member team that won silver but could compete for medals on individual events. Jade Carey and Skinner competed as individuals and are not part of the women's gymnastics team event, which holds its final on Tuesday.

The U.S. women's gymnastics team's performance fell short of meeting expectations overall on Sunday. They finished second at the team event, losing to Russia, after coming on top in every Olympics and world championship for the past decade. For MyKayla, a University of Utah athlete who was ranked fifth among the six members of the U.S. women's gymnastics team, the road to the Tokyo Olympics was long and difficult. The Gilbert, Ariz. native was not chosen to compete in the 2012 Olympic trials. In 2016, she was made an alternate for the Rio Olympics but was not given an official spot on the U.S. team.

USA Gymnastics issued a statement on Friday saying Biles would not compete in the vault or uneven bars finals following her earlier decision to withdraw from the women's team final and the all-around final. Biles, citing a need to protect her physical and mental well-being, withdrew from the all-around event and three of four event finals in which she qualified. The balance beam final on Tuesday is her last chance to add to the team silver medal, which her teammates won without her — and yet for her.

Skinner will join Carey, who recently placed eighth in the individual all-around competition, in the hunt for a vault medal. Both perform the same skills, a 2.5 twisting Yurchenko known as an Amanar and a 1.5 twisting front layout called a Cheng, and scored within three tenths of each other in qualifications. Carey got the edge there and is favored to top the podium, but the Americans will face stiff competition fromRebeca Andrade.

The Brazilian gymnast also competes the Cheng and gets big air. She qualified to the event final in third and is coming off winning a historic silver medal in the all-around. MyKayla Skinner will replace Biles in vault finals, but no American will be able to replace her in uneven bars finals because a third beside Biles and Sunisa Lee did not qualify. Skinner had come in fourth place in vault qualification but had originally been excluded because no country can have more than two gymnasts in one event final.

Carey punched her ticket to Tokyo before the Trials, based off her performance in the Apparatus World Cup Series over the last three years. All she needed to do to secure her spot was compete in the trials. Carey is a three-time World Championship silver medalist - twice for vault, and once for her floor routine.

But McCallum was better on the uneven bars and on the floor. The 24-year-old gymnast and oldest member of the United States' women's team competed as an Olympian for the first time on Sunday, July 25. She participated in the qualifying round at the Tokyo Olympics as an individual competitor rather than in a team event. To be able to continue in the Games, she had to finish in the top eight overall and be one of the top two U.S. gymnasts.

Biles also qualified for all four event finals, and said she will take each day at a time before deciding whether she will compete in those events. Only the top eight qualifiers compete in each event final, with a maximum of two per country. If she does decide to withdraw from those as well, here's who will replace her on each apparatus. Biles can also compete in next week's event finals competition, as she qualified for all four individual events. In these events, the top eight gymnasts qualify – but only two gymnasts per team are allowed to compete.

However, it was McCallum who qualified for the fourth spot on the U.S. women's gymnastics team. It was a close call, but ultimately, USA Gymnastics explained that they preferred to bring Skinner as an individual specialist. The athletes, however, aren't the only ones who will have to adjust. The UCLA women's gymnastics program is among the most high profile in the country. The team roster is filled with former Olympians like Kocian and Kyla Ross, and elites like Margzetta Frazier and Katelyn Ohashi, who have found happiness and an ardent social media following while competing for the Bruins.

Unfortunately, there's no other U.S. gymnast who got the qualifying scores necessary in the bars event, which Biles is also sitting out this Sunday. Suni Lee (who just won gold in the women's all-around competition) will be the only American competing. Biles still has not announced whether she is withdrawing from her final two events, beam and floor.

Similarly to bars, no other American woman can sub in for her, so if Biles withdraws, it will just be Lee on the bars and Carey on the floor repping Team USA on Monday. Skinner was an alternate for the 2016 Olympic Team, and narrowly missed her opportunity to compete in finals in Tokyo. Some members of the U.S. women's gymnastics team wore red leotards, some blue, and it all depends on what events they're in.

Last night, NBC announced that U.S. gymnast MyKayla Skinner will officially replace Simone Biles—who has withdrawn from all of her scheduled events in Tokyo so far—in the vault finals on Sunday. The announcement came just after Skinner had announced her gymnastics career was officially coming to a close. She had even booked her flight back home to Arizona, NBC reported. The Tokyo Games are my last shot to compete as a gymnast for Team USA, and my last shot at winning a gold medal. Everything I'd worked so hard for, and for so many years, seemed to be falling apart in front of me.

I was so pissed off that I actually had a really good practice that day—fueled, I think, by my anger. However, when Biles suddenly cut short her participation in the team final, it raised the possibility that Skinner could get another chance to compete in Tokyo if Biles ended up pulling out from the vault medal event. She pushed through all that to finish fourth in the all-around at Olympic Trials, which a USA Gymnastics committee warranted was worthy of a spot on the four-person Olympic team. As has been heavily documented, the usually unflappable Biles began to experience "the twisties," a dangerous mental block in which an athlete loses their spacial awareness, during the Olympic team final.

She won gold medals at the NCAA Championships in and and earned an all-around silver both years. She was named an alternate for the 2016 Rio Olympics despite posting the fourth-best all-around score at the 2016 U.S. gymnastics trials. She retired from elite gymnastics after the 2016 Olympics to focus on her college career with the Utah Red Rocks. Lee, the 18-year-old from Minnesota is a wonder on the uneven bars, one of a handful of gymnasts on the planet who can out-Biles Biles on the event.
